  Follow the following steps to write your analytical essay on the given passage:

  * Read for the general idea and for the progression, structure, and style of the passage;

  * Read with an eye for the specifics, including examples, statistics, quotes, wording, tone, and other things worth your attention, if any.

  When you write your analytical essay, you should write:

  In what ways, the author writes what with what intents or for whatpurposes.

  In other words, it is an essay summarizing the reading passage andanalyzing how the reading passage is written.

  Introduction

  In plain language 行文的style, the author persuades the readers thatAmerican students need bilingual or multilingual education, which decides America’s future 全文的argument要在introduction交代清楚. 然后,笼统介绍风格和策略 The austere diction, simple yet direct, makes the author sound calm and objective, and thus trustworthy. Meanwhile, multiple strategies, such as the use of quotes, statistics and examples, areemployed in order for the author to build a strong argument.


  Body

  Part 1: Paragraphs. 1 to 4

  The author is rather blunt 对于写作策略/风格的分析 about America’s being in adversity. Statistics are then used to illustrate the high levels of monolingualism as a disadvantageous situation, and the author finds the root of the problem that American schools are not doing a good job. This disadvantage is made clear when the author makes a contrast 写作策略between the US and its chief competitors — China and EU countries. It is obvious that Americans, the overwhelming majority of whom are monolingual, compare unfavorably with the Chinese and Europeans, asthe statistics as the compelling evidence are the clear indication of 写作策略America’s falling far behind China and Europe in terms of the national bilingualism or multilingualism by a massive margin. At this point, the author points out the implications of having this disadvantage by quoting an authoritative figure 写作策略who argues that America’s economic promise, international status, and homeland security 对于材料文内容的转述are threatened, and the quotation is a strategic play that lets the credible figure speak for the author and shows the objectivity of the conclusive statement 写作策略.


  Part 2: Paragraphs. 5 to 8

  The next paragraphs focus on the benefits of having the bilingual or multilingual ability. ←总分结构的脉络展开我们的写作→ Paragraph 5 uses a couple of studies 材料文作者的写作策略 to say that being bilingual or multilingual helps to develop scholastic aptitude and enhances students’ academic performance 对于材料文的内容概述, and in Paragraph 6, an authoritative and credible institution is quoted 写作策略 to show that the benefit extends to the fostering of general mental abilities and intelligence内容概述. Those benefits and effects are then illustrated by an instance 写作策略 in which students from unprivileged backgrounds at the author’s school are enabled to perform as well as the elite-class students 内容概述. At this point, the author reveals her identity — not a concerned outsider or layman but an educator and insider. Her identity strengthens her credibility and convinces readers of her point 材料文作者的写作意图.


  Part 3: Paragraphs. 9 to 10

  The author then introduces the benefits of learning an additional language that “go beyond the classroom” 学会用直接引用(材料文作者的原话)来写我们的作文, which are better career prospects 内容概述 and higher salaries 内容概述, and suggests, in Paragraph 10, that being bilingual is a must-have among a considerable portion of top-drawer professional 以转述的形式做内容概述. To illustrate the points, the author quotes the federal agency, the Bureau of Labor Statistics, as a reliable source of information, and uses the results of a study conducted by University of Florida and of another study done by Korn/Ferry. These benefits may stimulate individual readers’ desire to support the learning of a second language for the sake of economic gains.


  Part 4: Paragraphs. 11 to 12

  In Paragraph 11, foreign language learning is deemed as acompensation for the public policy and education of public schools, which are unfavorable to children’s development, and it is expected to make up for the discrepancy between the high expectation of policy makers and the inadequacy of the public education 对于材料文的解读性的内容梗概. In the end of Linda’s essay, there are warnings as other countries’ efforts and successes 对于材料文的解读性的内容梗概 are mentioned, as well as expectations, appeals and forecasts in creating America’ multilingual future. The calm Linda maintains consistently throughout the whole passage is also notable.


  Conclusion

  Albeit in plain language, the essay makes a compelling case about how important it is for American youths to have a bilingual or multilingual education 全文的argument要在Conclusion重申. In developing the argument, the author warns Americans of the current unfavorable situation, points out the immediate benefits, and introduces the advantages extending to the outside of the classroom简要陈述全文的要点, and a number of strategies are employed to substantiate the author’s point. Overall, the point is well made.
