　　Since the start of industrial revolution, humans have burned through enough fossil fuels - coal, oil, and natural gas - to add some 365 billion tonnes of carbon to the atmosphere. Deforestation has contributed to another 180 billion tonnes. Each year, we throw up another nine billion tonnes or so, an amount that has been increasing by as much as 6% annually. If current trends continue, such an increase in carbon dioxide concentrations will produce an eventful average global temperature rise of between 2 and 4 Degree Celsius, which will trigger a variety of world-altering events, including the disappearance of glaciers, the inundation of low-lying islands and coastal cities, and the melting of Arctic ice cap.
