SAT真题解析第五期：文法篇 (二)

　　今天我们来看几种考察频次略低一些的符号及它们各自的使用原则与禁忌。

　　分号（Semicolon）

　　分号的功能（大致类似于句号，有微弱不同）

　　1. 用分号连接两个独立句子，不加任何逻辑信号词；

　　Eg:

　　①More and more musicians are playing computerized instruments; ②more and more listeners are worrying about the future of acoustic instruments.

　　来，仔细读读这句话。是不是能发现其实句1句2首先都是拥有完整主谓结构的独立句子，再细一步是不是发现了句1其实就是句2的背景，抑或说说前提？那，因此，在这种情况下，逻辑信号词“thus, therefore, thereby, consequently, so”等等就可以被省略，分号就可以完成两句的连接。PS: 这里说是因果，不如说成顺承关系。至于顺承是什么？我们日后逻辑题说。

　　2. 分号连接两个独立句子，其中一个句子包含逻辑关系副词（however, indeed等）；

　　Eg:

　　① Music is a form of communication like language; ② the basic elements, however, are not letters but notes.

　　3. 一句话中出现了两个平行层次并且小平行结构中已出现了逗号，那么大平行结构项末的逗号升级为分号；

　　Eg:

　　India is a nation of ethnic and linguistic diversity, with numerous religions, including Hinduism, Islam, and Christianity; with distinct castes and ethnic groups; and with sixteen languages, including the official Hindi and the ‘associate official’ English.

　　多读两遍解构一下，虽然复杂但不算难，对吧？因为，还没出现插入和同位现象呢！细心就能拿到的分，就不要老是那么“慷慨”地舍弃了！ 4. 分号的使用禁忌；

　　1) 不用分号分割主从句；

　　Eg:

　　Although this is an atomic property; it generates molecular forces that cause many of the phenomenon we observe every day.

　　来，划重点，一眼瞄到关系（代/副）词是不是特关键？

　　2) 不用分号分割两个不完整的句子。

　　Eg:

　　As of 2014, twenty-five states and five Canadian provinces have confirmed cases of WNS; the affected region that now reaches as far west as the Missouri-Kansas border.来，划重点，一眼瞄到谓语动词且划清主从句结构是不是特关键？

　　有点难记对不对，没事。来，记住个小妙招：“断句流水不要用，两层平行需升级”。在整个SAT文法考试中，对分号号的考察形式永远都跳不出这个框。

　　解题思路： 根据题干的syntactic structure可以得知本题表意为“向东西南北”四个方向各自怎么延伸的；因此，没有谓语动词还被分号或，and的结构衔接的就一定是错的，排除法，答案选A。
