The Love Tunnel爱情通道

Mabel and Dave lived next door to each other and were in love. However, Mabels parents forbad her to see him because he was only a tutor at the local college, while she was the head typist at a university. But they were typical lovers and wanted to be together, so Dave planned to tunnel his way from his house to hers. When this task was completed, Dave installed a turbine to provide fresh air in the tunnel, and rang Mabel to tutor her on how to locate the entrance near the back of her house. To encourage Mabel to meet him at the twist where his digging had to change direction because of the roots of a tree, Dave said he had purchased a new typewriter for her to use in the room he had constructed near these roots. Mabel was so impressed by Daves eagerness to be with her that she immediately arranged some clothes in her bed to make it look as though she was asleep, and managed to twist her way through the small hole to meet him. This arrangement is possibly still going on, because when they want to meet in their special room, Dave rings Mabel and says, “Is your twin sister ready to go to sleep?”or Mabel rings Dave and says “My twin has just gone to sleep, lets meet.”

梅布尔和戴夫住隔壁，他们相爱了。可是梅布尔的父母禁止他们见面，因为戴夫只是一家地方大学的教师，而梅布尔却是一所综合性大学的主打字员。他们是一对典型的恋人，希望能在一起，所以戴夫打算在两家之间挖一个地道。地道挖好之后，戴夫安了一台涡轮机，为地道提供新鲜空气。然后他打电话给梅布尔教她如何在她家后院附近找到入口。戴夫挖地道的时候挖到一个树根，所以地道只好改变方向。为了鼓励梅布尔常来地道的弯曲处与自己见面，戴夫说为她买了一台新打字机，放在他在树根旁建的小屋里。梅布尔对戴夫如此急切地想与自己见面大为感动，她马上在被子里塞了些衣服，让它看起来好像她还睡在床上，然后设法在狭小的洞里曲折前进去与他见面。这种地下活动可能仍然在进行，因为每当他们想在小屋见面时，戴夫就会打电话给梅布尔，问她：“你的孪生姐姐准备睡觉了吗?”或者梅布尔会给戴夫打电话说：“我的双胞胎姐姐睡着了，我们见面吧。”
