Some people think leaving their home country provides more opportunities for working or studying, while others think staying in their own country is a better choice. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
To leave or to stay in our own country, that is a question. From my perspective, the key to this debate to a large extent lies in the domain we work in and the abilities we have fostered.
Nowadays, lots of students choose to pursue higher education abroad. Why do they choose to attend universities overseas?
Ø domain n. 领域
Ø foster vt.
Leaving the home country does have its edges. For one thing, when living in a country that is advanced in the academic or technological domain a person wishes to pursue, he or she has the chance to receive the education or training of much higher quality than what his or her motherland provides. In this case, they are more likely to polish their knowledge, optimise their techniques, and update the information related to the field, thus gaining an edge over other counterparts in the rat race. For another, some people, especially those who have mastered certain skills, can leave for the country where elites in relevant fields are in dire need. In other words, the more vacancies the foreign country offers, the more opportunities they have. By stark contrast, staying in the mother country may either render them lagging behind in knowledge updating or incur heavier pressure brought by the intense competition.
Ø edge n.
Ø motherland n. 祖国
Ø polish vt. 润色
Ø optimise vt. 优化
Ø the rat race n.
Ø elite n. 精英
Ø vacancy n.
Ø lag behind vi. 落后
There are also a couple of benefits if one chooses to stay in the home country. The most conspicuous one is that he or she is more able to adapt into the changeable working environment. Unlike people studying or working abroad, who may be confronted with language barriers and unfamiliar cultural backgrounds, those staying in the mother country are more than equal to the task of coping with their work based on their deep knowledge of relevant policies or sound connections in the industry. Not surprisingly, the latter can seize more opportunities, while the former may suffer from reverse culture shock.
Ø conspicuous adj.
Ø be more than equal to a task
Ø connections n.
Ø reverse culture shock n.
In a nutshell, if people tend to leave their home country for more studying or working opportunities, it is advised for them to think in advance about their individual issues and long-term goals, plan carefully, and get prepared for possible obstacles.
