Some college freshmen find that the courses they choose are not suitable for them. What are the causes of this? What can be done to solve the problem? (2022/9/3)

Introduction

In modern age, a mushrooming number of students,imbued with delight and anticipation, step into the university, only to find dejectedly that they do not really fit into the courses they previously opted for. Behind such a ubiquitous phenomenon,from my perspective, are two dominant factors and viable solutions are in desperate need to avert such a bleak future.

mushrooming  adj.

fit into  vt.

ubiquitous    adj.  普遍存在的;无所不在的;

viable  adj.

in desperate need  迫切需要

avert such a bleak future  vt.

Body 1

The principal responsibility taker for such a prickly issue would be students themselves who have vague perceptions towards curricula. Before entering the university, most students,who are overwhelmed by exam-oriented and exercises-stuffed education, scarcely have opportunities to explore their own interests. When feeling at a loss for what to choose, those students probably resort to their parents and teachers who always give advice according to job availability heedless of students’ interest . By this token, loads of freshmen are blind to what they are truly keen on and apt at, slipping into unbefitting subjects.

首要原因是freshmen自己对于学校课程认知不清。在上大学之前,学生大都专注于学术课程本身,对于自己的兴趣和特长缺乏探索;同时,很多学生的学习和生活都比较遵从依赖老师与父母的建议,而对于课程的选择大都是以就业为导向,很容易造成学生在课程选择时出错;

prickly  adj.  棘手的;

be overwhelmed by  被...淹没;对...应接不暇;

heedless of  不注意;不理会;

by this token  由此说来;

loads of  许多,大量的 ;

unbefitting  adj.  不合适的;

Body 2

Another contributing factor would be associated with curriculum provision of tertiary education. Courses in universities, compared with those in secondary schools, rocket to a height where varied capacities are in higher requirements. Confronted with high-demanding courses, freshmen find themselves difficult in gearing themselves to new majors. Apart from this, a medley of courses are so obsolete that by no means can they keep pace with the blossom of a specific field. In this case, students ,disillusioned by what they choose, are easily to become lost sheep.

rocket  v.  增长;

gear ... to ...  v.

a medley of  许多;

obsolete  adj.  废弃的;退化的;过时的;

blossom  n.

Conclusion

In order to preclude students from going awry, colleges and universities are supposed to play a leading role by systematically re-equipping educational resources, upgrading schools and revamping curricula to keep abreast with times. Meanwhile, opportunities for trial and error could be proffered to students who are on a wrong path to make a second choice. In terms of students,they, if equipped with wider knowledge scope ,are bound to be more highly adaptive in their further study. Also, seeking to forge a clear position on what they are academically outstanding and the career path they pursue to embark on could make a difference.

解析

为了解决这个问题,学校应该首先优化教育资源,修订课程,跟上时代的步伐;与此同时,可以给到学生试错的机会,能够在大学重新作出正确的课程选择;学生自身也应该加强自身的适应能力,对自己有更清晰的认知,对自己将来的就业方向有更明确的定位;

preclude ... from doing...  v.

go awry  v.  出错;走错路;

revamping  v.  改进;修改;翻新;

keep abreast with...  v.

forge a clear position on ...  v.  明确定位;
