But a study has found that, contrary to popular belief, when a relationship is in trouble it is men who suffer the most.

Romantic ups and downs apparently have a greater effect on the mental health of young men than women.

 

很明显浪漫爱情的起起伏伏对男人在精神的影响比女人要多。

 

While women are more likely to display their depression to friends, men are more likely to store up their feelings - with negative health effects including making them more likely to drink alcohol.

 

女人们很可能把自己的压抑诉说给朋友们，但男人则会深藏起自己的情感，这样就会对健康造成如同酗酒一样恶劣的影响。

 

Professor Robin Simon, who led the study, admitted she was shocked that the results overturned the widespread assumption that women are more vulnerable to the emotional rollercoaster of relationships.

 

指导这项研究的罗宾?西蒙教授承认说，当她得知这个实验结果颠覆了以前人们想象中的爱情一定是女人受更多伤的这种想法时很吃惊。

 

'Surprisingly, we found young men are more reactive to the quality of ongoing relationships,' she said. That means men's mental health is more affected by the harmful stress of a rocky relationship.

 

她说：”奇怪的是，我们发现年轻男子在进行中的爱情质量会反应更加激烈，那就意味着男性的精神健康更会被一段坚固感情中的压力所影响。

 

The researchers also found that men get greater emotional benefits from the positive aspects of an ongoing romance. This contradicts the stereotypical image of stoic men who are unaffected by what happens in their relationships.

 

研究者也发现男人也会从进行中的浪漫爱情中情感上可以得到更多的快乐。但是如果那种无论对爱情中发生什么都不在意的男人就不会出现这种情况。
