挥手告别
The fishing village on the east side of the island was able to thrive, even though the weather was usually cold and stormy. This was said to be due to their approach to their work and the support of the community. The timber in the boats was always painted and their fishing gear was always clean and tidy. Even those who were usually all thumbs in practical things, were able to use their fishing gear with ease. However, it was particularly due to the fishermens wives that they were so successful. Early each morning if the tide was right, even when the threat of a storm could be heard by thunder and the men wanted to stay in their warm beds, the wives would thunder at them and threaten to thrust them out of the house without breakfast if they didnt get up. The wives would then ensure the men had special medicine to protect their throats and hot soup to tide them over until they returned. When the men were ready to leave for work, the wives would tidy away the breakfast plates, tidy their hair and wave to their men as they used a tissue to wipe away the occasional tear. Then, as the thrust of each engine sent the boats out of the harbor, the men would turn to the shore and raise their thumbs to indicate that all was well. They knew this was the signal the wives waited for before they went back to bed for a sleep, or perhaps just to thumb through a magazine.
虽然天气寒冷并时常有风暴袭击，小岛东侧的渔村却仍享繁荣。据说这与他们对待工作的态度和社区的支持是分不开的。渔船上的木料常刷油漆，渔具经常保持着干净整齐，即使是那些平时做事笨手笨脚的人，用起他们的渔具来也十分容易。不过，他们如此成功尤其要归功于渔夫们的妻子。每天一大早，如果潮水没有问题，即使从雷声中听出有暴风雨的征兆，而且渔夫们也不想离开暖和的被窝，这时妻子们便会朝他们大喊并威胁说如果他们不起床就要把他们推出门，并且不让他们吃早饭。妻子们还一定会做到让男人们在回来之前有特别的药保护嗓子，有热汤使他们渡过难关。当男人们准备好要出海时，妻子们便会收拾好早餐用的餐具，把头发梳整齐，然后与自己的丈夫挥手告别，还不时用纸巾擦去偶尔流下的眼泪。随着发动机的推力将渔船送出港口，渔夫们会回头望着岸边并竖起拇指表示一切顺利，他们知道这是妻子们等待的信号，然后她们才会回去睡上一觉或者迅速翻阅一本杂志。
