The Meaning of Life生活的意义
The life of big brother Bill seemed to be the ultimate to little brother Lenn.Bill was an undergraduate, who traveled on the underground every day. He told Lenn that he had signed up to undertake a course in philosophy as part of his degree, in order to develop a better understanding of ways to consider such difficult questions as: to see underneath a vegetable growing underground, do you have to be underground yourself, to see the underneath?
Lenn thought Bill had all the answers, even to the questions he hadnt yet thought to ask. However, Lenn soon discovered that underneath the apparent umbrella of leisure and idleness at university, a student was supposed to undergo exams and expected to uncover more than just the ultimate truth to the meaning of life. So Lenn decided he would never underline the word university in any set of options he might be offered, because it could be too difficult to undo the damage it might cause to his development as an independent thinker; Bill just gave him an understanding smile and settled back down to sleep.
大哥哥比尔的生活对于小弟弟莱恩来说似乎是一种境界。比尔是大学本科生，每天乘地铁上学。他告诉莱恩，他已经登记要学一门哲学课程，这是他学位的一部分，也是为了更好地理解一些复杂问题，比如：要想看到长在地下的蔬菜底部，你是不是一定得自己也在地下才能看到蔬菜的底部?
莱恩认为，比尔知道所有答案，即使是他还没有想到要问的问题他也有答案。可是，莱恩很快就发现，在大学看似悠闲懒散的“伞”下面，学生必须经历考试，还要揭示很多东西，这些东西不仅仅只是对生命的意义最为重要的真理。所以莱恩决定无论要他做哪套选择，他决不在大学那个词下面划线，因为大学对他作为一个独立的思想家的发展可能造成的负面影响怕是很难消除。比尔只是对他理解地笑了笑，然后就安安静静地睡着了。
