  「The Reading Passage」

  How to Increase the Number of Women Winning Nobel Prize

  SAT亚太考区2017年5月写作真题

  材料文原文获取源:《新SAT写作真题集(第五版)》

  The essay can be divided into three general sections: Section 1: Para. 1-4 Section 2: Para. 5-8, and Section 3: Para. 9-10. And we write the analytical essay in response to the division.

  【Section 1: Para. 1-4】

  The essay, at its beginning, depicts a real-life situation as a hook that stimulates readers’ interest. As the public perception about Nobel Prize winners is that those scientists must sleep in the lab and be buried in reports, laundry folding, a household chore that feels too average people, contrasts sharply with the perception. This contrast is to intrigue readers. The description is also to make readers aware that Nobel winners, those female ones in particular, also need to deal with average people’s daily tasks. This also foreshadows the author’s later response to the female scientists’ difficulties and needs. The author then revisits the history of females winning Nobel Prize in the sphere of science, and the handful of laureates, the mere number of them, sadden the author and should also sadden readers. The author obviously is not delighted by the “banner year” of 2009, when three women won the prize, as she suggests that the situation was transient and soon died away. The word “sweep” indicates males’ domination in the Nobel Prize winning and accordingly females as rarities in the pantheon of Nobel scientists.

  To break down this part of our analysis by coloration

  summary (probably with reasonable interpretation);

  purpose/effect;

  techniques in diction

  When the author points out the high requirements of being a female Nobel winner, she emphasizes having “preternatural determination” as a critical trait in addition to high intelligence, which is taken-for-granted.The diction is obviously exaggerated, and represents the author’s intended meaning that females having scientific pursuits must overcome the obstacles, from the culture, society and politics, that are as difficult and woefully adverse as the determination needs to be “preternatural”. The author then illustrates the difficultiesby three examples from the three dimensions. Paragraph 6 is thetransition. In that paragraph, the rhetorical question is to stress the lack oflegitimate reasons for the rarity of female Noble winnersin the modern age when the Civil Right Act, affirmative action and Title IX have removed the obstacles.It thus follows that institutions and federal agencies, as are named by the author, should take the responsibility to facilitate female scientists’ careers. xxxxxxxxx【Para. 7、8略】

  【Section 3: Para. 9-10】

  Good Luck. See you next Thursday.
