There are many famous people in the US and one of them, if not the most famous, is Abraham Lincoln the 16th president of the United States, also known as Honest Abe.

When Lincoln first took office in 1861, the United States was not truly united. The nation had been arguing for more than a hundred years about slavery and each state’s right to allow it. When he became president, Lincoln allowed slavery to continue in southern states but he outlawed its spread to other states. Southern leaders didn’t agree with this plan and decided to secede, or withdraw, from the nation.

Therefore, the civil war broke out and continued for the next four years. In 1863, Lincoln gave his famous Emancipation Proclamation speech which ended slavery in the US forever. When the war was nearly over, Lincoln was re-elected in 1864 but less than a week after people celebrated the end the Civil War, he became the first president to be assassinated.

I thought Lincoln was one of the greatest leaders the US has ever had. He was charismatic, honest and moral. He held the country together through the civil war, made many tough decisions and also brought an end to slavery. And this is why everyone in the US knows who Abe Lincoln is.
