Admittedly, advertisements may be so common that we sometimes are unaware of them or of what they are doing. This exactly the success of modern-day advertising: we are swayed without even realizing it.

It is perfectly normal that some people are unable to sense that they are being the target of advertising and that they are being influenced. This is because the mind game many adverts play is subtle. The new tricks do not promote a product or service by hard selling. They instead adopt soft selling, a promotional strategy that may be imperceptible or quite patient. In those commercials, the punchline waits where the viewers and the advertisers have established some agreement and where the consumers are drawn in, and then does the probably easiest job, taking over the wallet. The smarter soft selling does not even have the punchline, and consumers think they are reading a passage or viewing a program while an idea, the idea that the advertisers want them to have and that will eventually lead to a purchase, is being instilled.

As we may now realize how cunning, in a good way or a bad one, today’s advertising is, we may have a look around our homes and find so many things we have bought under the sway of advertising. There may be a shirt we bought as we simply passed by a poster of an average person looking so neat and steady in the shirt, after a long or slow day, and got captivated. What a brilliant mind game the poster plays! And there may be a knife that we saw when the master chef used it on the cooking show. We may even be so proud of our sharp eye for not letting the knife slip out of our sight.

At this point, aren’t we ready for the conclusion that advertising is so persuasive and successful. It is exactly because they hide well that they do the job right.
