　　Traffic noise affected the greatest number of people in both areas. In the daytime, 64 million urban residents were disturbed, almost twice the corresponding figure for rural areas (34 million). During the night, fewer people were affected, with the figures falling to 48 million in cities and 24 million in rural areas. Train noise affected similar numbers of people during the day and at night, with 10 million and 8 million in cities, compared with8 million and 6 million respectively in rural areas.

　　The other two sources of noise affected fewer residentsacross both areas. During the daytime, 4 million urban dwellers were exposed to aircraft noise, with the figure dropping sharply to just 1 million at night. Similarly, in rural areas, 1 million people were affected by aircraft noise at night, which was half the daytime figure. Industrial noise had the smallest impact overall, affecting only 1 million people during the daytime and 0.25 million at night in urban areas, whereasno rural residents experienced this source of noise at either time of day.
