Recently I have just welcomed my new roommate, one of my middle school classmates, and living with her has been a delightful experience. Therefore, if I am asked to make suggestions to help my friend who is on a tight budget, I will advise him to find a roommate instead of reducing consumption.
To begin with, having a roommate means we can share rent and electricity bill together. Sometimes these fees can account for a quarter of our monthly income and splitting this bill fifty fifty can help reduce our economic burden. Take myself as an example. Before living with my classmate, I had to spare more than 4000 Yuan for diets and shelter every month. However, now my roommate and I share our basic living expenses. More fortunately, under her supervision, I have learned to keep an account and stop spending arbitrarily; with her company, I can always have someone to talk with or to turn to.
Compared with finding a roommate, buying new technology products cannot help reduce daily expenses at all. It is possible that upgrading or repairing technological products will cost us a large sum of money. However, most products’ durability and warranty policy indicate that we have only a slim chance of paying for upgrades and maintenance. For example, those household appliances such as refrigerator, oven and washing machine usually have a long lifespan up to 3 years and at least a full one-year warranty. In this case, manufacturers or service suppliers bear the cost once these machines need to be replaced or refitted. Thus, it is impractical to count on keeping the old versions for a longer time as an effective method to tighten our belt.
Admittedly, cooking at home seems to be far more economical and healthier than dining in restaurants. Generally homemade dishes are associated with no pesticide residues, no excessive additives, and no premium. Nevertheless, money saved by shopping inexpensive groceries is just a small sum. According to my life experience, this figure could be around 80 Yuan per week. In addition, we ought not to forget one important factor, ingredients’ quality. Those cheaper food materials are often substandard and perishable. It is not improbable for a diner to suffer from malnutrition or illnesses after long-term intake of low-quality food.
Given the above points, it is more recommendable for my friend to find a roommate so as to reduce living expenditures.
