In the past century, human society has achieved unprecedented technological progresses, by which, from my perspective, the standard of living for average persons has been greatly bettered.

Admittedly, technological advancement has posed a threat to human’s well-being to some extent. To illustrate, people, especially young children and teenagers, nowadays easily get indulged in or even addicted to hi-tech gadgets, spending hours playing video games and using social media, while they usually neglect their real life and thus lack face-to-face interaction with their families and friends. This, in the long term, may incur feelings of loneliness and isolation. More accurately, those people are basing their sense of self-esteem on the number of ‘hearts’ and followers, and once the count is below their expectation, they may feel frustrated or even have a negative view on themselves. Meanwhile, collapsing in front of the screen all day with snacks in hand, people nowadays are more likely to suffer from declining level of health, such as corpulence or obesity, while people in the past, without such siren calls, allocated more time to accompanying their beloved ones and smelling the roses.

In effect, the cutting-edge technology has enabled netizens to not only spice up their social life through speedy interaction among other cyber users but also facilitate cultural, business and academic exchanges through sundry online platforms, regardless of geographic distance or accidents and incidents popping up in the real life. A typical example is that international students can attend the online courses offered by world-renowned universities without stepping in the campus thousands of miles away and concerning about the gravity of pandemics. Besides, video game producers have also developed new products regarding intellectual progresses and physical fitness. Moreover, medical and biological breakthroughs have cured more diseases, improved the patients’ quality of life, and increased life expectancy. All of those cannot be imagined by people living in previous centuries.
