Which of the two views do you agree with?

  1. It is important to read or watch the news presented by people whose views are different from yours.

  2. It is important to read or watch the news presented by people whose views are similar to yours.

  【立场:支持观点二】

We may read news selectively. 【短句】Some may have the preference to certain journalists whose views oppose theirs, while others may have the inclination to those who are on the same page with them. If a comparison needs to be made with regard to the significance, it is more advisable that 【that引导的名词性从句作为句子实际主语,句首的it是形式主语,指代这个实际主语】we read or watch the news brought by people whose views align with our own.

The assumption underlying the first preference is that open-mindedness and aneclectic worldview can form during the clash between different or conflicting ideas.Although these ideas may rival each other, the contradiction is not the essence of their interaction; instead, these diverse views complete one another. 【层次较复杂的句子】 They are like pieces of a puzzle【比喻句】, different yet complementary. 【整句为短句】However, constant exposure to different views can undermine one’s confidence in what the individual should believe. ←中心句As a further consequence, if our beliefs are the infusion of a variety of views, a stable core of values may never develop. It should be noticed that preeminent philosophers adhere to their philosophical thought thatdeliberately excludes views differing from it. It is the same case with average people. Not reading the news conveying ideas that are the opposite of their own, people can establish uncompromising convictions.

Meanwhile, there are concerns that prejudice, as the result of embracing only ideas same as ours, impedes critical thinking and produces doctrines. People may assume the superiority of their own ideas if what they always receive is no more than approvals, just like in an echo chamber【比喻句】, where they only hear their own voice. However, putting a filter, a screening process that eliminates views challenging ours, is not to reject alien ideas, which can be diversions, but to reinforce our own beliefs by defending against the counterproductive diversity of thoughts. ←中心句 【层次较复杂的句子】 Besides, insisting on one’s own belief while paying due respect to others’ is not a paradox. 【For instance, a committed republican does not read or watch news networks that represent the democratic party. The loyalty avoids the repulsive political swing. 【短句】Since neither republicans nor democrats are perfect, while they both suffer limitations and have their own advantages, a firm stand is far more desirable than the opportunist swinging. 很值得记忆的例子内容】

In conclusion, news presented by those whose ideas differ from our own is of some significance. However, it is deleterious to a greater extent. By contrast, reading and watching news presented by people who are on our side is recommendable.
