　　When Troy first met Kari, a beautiful blonde, he was in bliss. It didn't matter that her hair was bleached to that color or that they had met under terrible circumstances. Troy just felt blessed to know her.

　　It had been spring when they had seen each other. The bleak winter was over, flowers were in full blossom and Troy had been outside blazing a trail through a more remote part of a forest near his home. He had just been preparing to climb over a bluff to pick the blossom of a rare cliff flower with red blots on its petals, when he realized that his watch was on the blink. As Troy bent his head down to fix it, a wave of smoke rolled over him, blotting out the sun for a brief moment.

　　Troy raised his head quickly, blinked his eyes in disbelief, and saw a roaring blaze coming towards him. Just after the terror of the situation made his bladder lose its contents, Kari came running out of the woods. She was also terrified and screaming, and there was nowhere to run. The blight had blocked any escape. When the heat of the fire began to blister their skin, Troy grabbed Kari by the waist and together they jumped off the bluff into the lake below.

　　Later, as they were both sitting safely in the local police station drinking bland coffee, Troy thought to himself that he never could have come up with a more fascinating blueprint for how to become so quickly connected with such a beautiful woman.
