A prominent person that I’ve been interested in is Yuan Longping known as the “father of hybrid rice”, who is now in his 90s. As we all know, he is a globally renowned Chinese agricultural scientist, who has dedicated his life to the research and development of hybrid rice for ages and received many awards. For example, he gained the 2004 World Food Prize for his breakthrough achievement in developing the genetic material and technologies essential for breeding high-yielding hybrid rice varieties. So far, hybrid rice has helped many countries in addressing famine, saving thousands of people from starvation.
Apart from his remarkable achievements, another reason why I admire him so much is that he is unlike most famous people, like superstars who always dress themselves up in fancy clothes and look like a million dollars. Being a well-known celebrity and great scientist, Professor Yuan Longping is a humble man and keeps a low profile. He has spent his whole life in the field, wearing plain clothes and being buried in farming. Even though he is as old as the hills, he has never stopped exploring and researching in agriculture.
